I hated photography until I was 21. With a passion for living the moment, inspired by zen philosophy, and martial arts training from a young age, the concept of freezing a fleeting moment was incongruous. Why try to capture a moment, eyes squinting behind a piece of glass, when the moment itself should be enjoyed? I lived a year in Japan, training in Aikido in an old dojo in a small village. I did not take a single photograph in Japan.
Studying Astronomy at St. Paul's School and Dartmouth College, I learned the photographic process as a means to study the stars. During this period, I reconciled my distaste for photography. To capture a moment on film is an experience of itself, one which I find increasingly challenging and meaningful.
I started work in photography assisting Mark Benjamin, cinematographer. He taught me what an F-stop is while I struggled to set up his tripod. Assisting Michael Filonow, I learned how much can be done with natural light and careful composition. Working with Greg Kessler led to backstage fashion photography.
